Driving License Category C
Commercial driver's licences are a driving licence of category C. It allows drivers to drive straight trucks, buses and combination vehicles. This license also permits drivers to operate passenger vans, small hazardous material (HAZMAT) and combination vehicles.
Similar to professionals who have Class A CDLs Class C license holders can secure endorsements to expand their skills and job opportunities. The most common types of endorsements include:
Passenger vehicles
If you are planning to drive a car for passengers or truck, or a rental moving vehicle like a Uhaul you must have a class C license. The driver's manual for each state will offer an exhaustive description of the vehicles that qualify. It is a great idea for young drivers to begin their driving career with this license since it will allow them to gain valuable experience in driving and develop their skill before they reach the legal age for a full licence.
Before they can apply for an intermediate license, drivers under the age of 18 must log 40 hours of driving practice and have the learners permit for a minimum of six month. They are not permitted to drive between 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. in the event that they are attending an important occasion at school or at work. The number of passengers allowed is restricted to one person younger than 19 years old. They must only drive when a licensed driver over 21 supervises them. These restrictions are in effect until the driver reaches the age of 18. Or, they may choose to enroll in an advanced class and obtain an E or class H endorsement to remove the restrictions.
Hazardous materials
A Class C commercial driver's license permits drivers to operate vehicles that don't meet the requirements of Class A or B licenses. This license also allows drivers to operate passenger vehicles that can carry 16 or more passengers, which includes the driver, and also vehicles that transport cargo classified as hazardous materials (hazmat). The drivers must pass a knowledge exam and undergo special training to obtain an endorsement on their CDL.
The endorsement H gives a trucker the ability to operate a vehicle that transports hazardous materials in placardable quantities. It is only valid in the event that the quantity of material being transported is within the limit set by the DOT, the material is properly classified and labeled and the vehicle and cargo meet safety standards. A hazmat employee is required to go through specialized training in order to ensure that the appropriate safety precautions are taken when transporting these substances.
There are other endorsements that can be added to an CDL in addition to the H. The N endorsement permits tanker drivers to transport liquids that are volatile and gases. The truckers must pass an examination to prove their knowledge of specific areas to earn this endorsement. The T endorsement permits drivers to operate triple or double trailers which require additional skills and knowledge. The X endorsement requires that truckers pass a niche test to be able to operate tanker vehicles transporting explosive materials.
Each motor vehicle that contains Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 materials must be accompanied at all times by the driver or an authorized representative of the motor carrier. This requirement applies to interstate and in-state transportation and to shipments that carry hazardous materials.
The hazmat endorsement is not available for truck drivers who deliver local deliveries. Drivers must have at least two years of experience in driving to earn this endorsement. They must also demonstrate good health, have a clean driving record, and pass a physical exam. In addition they must pass a background check and drug test. Drivers who do not meet these standards could face fines or lose their CDL.
Combination vehicles
Different countries have different licensing schemes. These are based upon factors such as age, vehicle type, and others. Some are alike, while others have very unique classifications. Some classes of license are reserved for taxi drivers, while others are reserved for those who operate passenger cars or haul hazardous material. Drivers in need of a new license must apply to the local transportation department and follow the process for obtaining one.
In the United States, a person who wishes to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMV) must get a class C driver's license. A class C license permits the driver to operate trailers and trucks that have a Gross Weight Rating of less than 26,001 pounds. The driver is also able to transport more than 16 passengers, including the driver. Based on the state, it may also include a hazmat endorsement or a school or student bus endorsement.

Trailers

A non-CDL class C licence allows you to operate vehicles that are not classified as a commercial vehicle or whose total gross weight rating is less than 26,001 pounds.
